FBE Out There! AGAPE Uganda Project

The Agape Project Elective allows students to assist in the planning and design of a school and accommodation for children who have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS in Uganda. This project has a real client and a real site located about 30 kilometers north of Uganda's capital, Kampala. The studio was run with support from ARUP.

Preliminary masterplan concepts for the project were initiated by teams of practitioners and students in a two day charette, and a subsequent two week winter elective studio in 2006. In this elective, students worked in interdisciplinary mode to elaborate on ideas generated previously, and focus on the systems inherent in the site’s development.

One of the greatest challenges students faced was that they worked remote from the site, and as such their knowledge of the place, the problem, the situation, constraints and opportunities was learned through the insight of others who have been there.

This online forum was established as a “community of learning”, to allow students to communicate and collaborate both between themselves, as well as with other stakeholders that are familiar or involved with the site and project.
